South-View Cemetery, founded in 1886, is more than 100 acres south of downtown where race or religion never dictated who could be buried here. The Whitman sisters, the four daughters of a slave turned pastor, were a successful vaudeville act in the early 1900s, unique as a women-owned, African-American production company that performed nationally and internationally. Alberta 'Bert' often performed in drag with her sisters. The Whitman Sisters would become the highest paid black act on the black vaudeville circuit. (Jenni Girtman / Atlanta Event Photography)
