This location is below the dam, where the water shoots out of Lake Lanier and starts the Chattahoochee on its run toward Atlanta. If you're going across the dam on Buford Dam Road with the lake on your right, the road that takes you down to the lower pool is on your left. The Corps of Engineers charges $4 a car to access it. The river courses out of the dam in a narrow, deep channel, turns a bend and broadens out over some shoals. This is a popular place for trout fishermen to wade into the water. (I was surprised to find that the Chattahoochee above Roswell is a well-regarded trout stream.) This spot is very busy in the morning as tubers and kayakers put in and fishermen wade out.
